“And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.”
Matthew 9:20-22 KJV
Sometimes the trappings of this life become almost too much to bare. Have you ever found yourself in a time of desperation? A time, where it feels like no matter what you do, things never work out? Many of us suffer through seasons of struggle. What do you do in such a time? How do you cope?
We like to feel sorry for ourselves, and throw pity parties. If we let it, our hurts, habits, and hang-ups can occupy all of our time. Some try to distract themselves by less than ideal means. Self-harm, substance abuse, pornography, affairs, and the like abound. Some people spend their whole lives trying to fill a void in their hearts. Chasing things they will never catch.
For others, they think going to church is the answer. But, that is only part of the answer. Going to church and worshiping are great things. However, sometimes we get too caught up with doing church stuff that we forget the fundamentals of our faith. It’s easy for your faith to become part of a routine. Something you do out of habit, not desire.
I went to a weeklong revival recently, and I’ve come to realize that I had fallen into such a routine. I would go to church diligently, and read my bible when I remembered to do so. But, my heart wasn’t in it the way it used to be. I had become complacent. I saw people worshiping in the Spirit, and recalled when I used to be that way. While the nights were long, some services lasted six hours or more, they were all beneficial to me.
I’ve been reminded that being religious and having faith are two separate things. Sometimes these things happen concurrently, sometimes they ebb and flow. What is good to remember is that it all starts at the feet of Jesus. We should all strive to humble ourselves to the ground with just the hope of touching the hem of his garment.
The woman in the verses above was healed of what ailed her. What’s important to remember is that it wasn’t a sacred piece of fabric, her diligence in study, or a long winded prayer that cured her. She thought touching his robe would heal her, but her faith is what made her whole.
Imagine what a touch of faith could do in your life.
